Mission Statement & Our History
The Somonauk Public Library District will provide quality library service which will effectively meet the informational, educational, and recreational needs of district residents of all ages, with special emphasis on supplying popular materials, providing reference service, and assisting students of all ages in meeting their educational needs.
When the Somonauk Village Hall was completed in 1925, the southeast room was reserved for a library under the direction of the Somonauk Woman’s Club. Opening day was held on February 28, 1925 with 1860 books.
Since 1925, the library has moved twice and in 2009 opened our new 15,000 sq. ft. building. As well as books, the library offers e-books, magazines, newspapers, DVD’s & Playaways. Services include programs for all ages including Bingo for Seniors and 5 book discussion groups! Be sure to take a walk down our beautiful winding path through the prairie grass to the north and learn about all the different species of prairie grasses depicted on the signage.
